Mission Statement
The mission of Northwest Middle School Science & Technology Magnet is to develop
      academically competent, lifelong learners.

School History
Northwest Middle School Science & Technology Magnet first opened its doors as Northwest
Junior High in 1924. With the tiger as a mascot and claiming school colors of black and gold,
Northwest has served its neighborhood for over 75 years. Now an inner city school, Northwest has
become a Science & Technology Magnet, teaching the core curriculum in the context of
science, integrating technology and project-based learning to bring a well-rounded education to
our students. For more information about our history, click here.

BIST
Since first implementing the BIST model in the 2003-2004 school year, our suspensions have decreased by two-thirds.  Northwest Behavior Interventionist, Tim Robinson,  explains, "BIST is a discipline model that empowers teachers with the tools to help children manage their own behavior.  The language of BIST helps teachers and other school adults to avoid power struggles with kids, and other components of the model enable us to keep our students close to us so that we can work with problematic behaviors rather than put struggling students out of school. The model really helps adults to generate trust in their students."
